This war practically started itself. Read about why our ancestors would rather send millions of young men to throw themselves at machine guns than to try to live together in peace. (About the only good thing to come out of this crappy war was a ban against chemical weapons.)
Yes, World War II was really World War I on steroids. World leaders had an opportunity to assure a lasting peace and prevent another bloodbath. They chose tyranny and cowardice instead.
World War II was simply World War I plus a short intermission. By the time the Japanese fleet pulled off the surprise air raid of the century, Europe and the rest of the world were already aflame. (This article still has my pen name Jerry Curtis as its by-line.)
OK, so the allies defeated Germany and Japan. The forces of fascism were vanquished, and an era of world peace and prosperity were about to begin. *Klaxon sounds* Nope, a new brand of conflict known as the Cold War began. It lasted from from 1945 until the Berlin Wall fell in 1990.
